A youth-driven community mural project has already been designed and is waiting to be painted in the center of town with your support!
Our “Engaging Communities” Mural Project will work with the Malden community to engage at-risk youth in the artistic process and create a mural for their neighborhood at the main subway station in the center of town. Facilitated by The Art Connection (www.theartconnection.org ) and artists Tova Speter (www.tovaspeter.com ) and Anyahlee (www.anyahlee.com) , the community will be involved by literally “getting their hands dirty,” as they are able to paint the mural they have created in a series of design workshops and community input events.
The concept behind this project is that of community collaboration and empowerment: we brought the community together, encouraged dialogue, and worked with them to share their ideas and creative designs. They are now ready for the implementation phase. We need your help to make this happen as our anticipated funding did not come through. The plans, permission, etc is all set - any gift will help us reach our goal!
This mural project promotes civic engagement and neighborhood pride. Murals not only transform physical environments, they also impact and change the lives of those who create them. For participants, it provides an opportunity for positive self expression, to increase self esteem, and to create a lasting testament to the hope they hold for themselves and their community. As noted by the mayor, “This art project, which will transform a drab wall of an underpass into a lively statement about the City of Malden’s rich 350 year old plus history, has been embraced by the community at large. The project has also energized a core group of youth… we are most anxious to get this project underway and look forward to the Community Painting Day…. ”
