Serving novice and experienced northern gardeners of all ages through education, encouragement and community. We connect plants and people!

THE MINNESOTA STATE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY since 1866, has been nurturing gardeners throughout Minnesota and the upper Midwest. We help gardeners—and gardens—grow by providing:

  • Northern Gardener magazine - the longest running magazine published in Minnesota - resources and expert information on cold climate gardening.
  • Minnesota Green program - distributes over $100,000 in seeds and plants to community gardens
  • Educational programs - new and experienced gardeners find advice and encouragement through a wide array of specialized classes.
  • Garden-in-a-Box - provides garden boxes, soil, plants and instructions, helping people create beauty and grow healthy food in space spaces.
  • Volunteers dedicate thousands of hours of their time to encourage new gardeners, share their expertise and strengthen community.
  • MSHS Library - largest circulating horticulture library in MN
  • Website www.northerngardener.org is a quick link to garden clubs, plant societies and a wide range of gardening resources

With only 55% of our operating cost covered by membership and subscription dues, we rely on additional contributions to not only sustain the services we offer to members, but to expand those services to those who have yet to discover the bounty of benefits that gardening offers.

Donations to MSHS go a long way. Their efforts are truly grass roots, pun intended.

MSHS has served Minnesota gardeners for well over a century through good times and hard times. It is the number one resource for Zone 4 gardeners and has been the major resource for us as we have gone from beginning to competent gardeners.

Gardening in Minnesota would be a lonely pursuit without MSHS! As a Zone 4 gardener, MSHS's NORTHERN GARDENER magazine is the only gardening magazine that is 100% appropriate to local conditions. As a master gardener committed to disseminating information about best gardening practices, I find MSHS to be an invaluable resource!

This is actually my third donation this year. I love what the Hort does and I get so much out of the magazine and my membership. Flo Golod

Northern Gardener magazine provides essential information for growing the best trees, shrubs and plants in this climate. They are also terrific supporters of community gardens.
