Habitat for Humanity International
A US registered nonprofit

Americus, GA USA
HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates simple, decent homes with the help of homeowner families, through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials.

HFH homes are sold to low-income families at no profit and are financed through affordable long-term loans. Mortgage length varies between seven to 30 years.

All mortgage payments, combined with donations, are used to build more homes around the world through the revolving fund. A financial contribution to HFH continues through generations of homeowners.

Habitat for Humanity is not a “give away” program. In addition to these monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (“sweat equity”) into building their home and homes of others. Among other benefits, this reduces the cost of the homes, increases the pride of home ownership and builds communities.

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, many organizations rush to the scene to provide medical services, distribute food and hygienic supplies and establish temporary shelter solutions. However, months and even years later, many families still live in run-down shelter conditions. This is where Habitat for Humanity steps in.

As a builder of decent, safe, affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity recognizes the need to provide long-term solutions to the housing needs of families who have been affected and displaced by disasters and conflicts. While Habitat cannot act as a relief agency, it seeks to facilitate recovery options for those victims who seek permanent housing to rebuild their lives.

Habitat is also involved with disaster mitigation and preparedness by creating awareness and providing information before a disaster strikes to lessen the impact on homes and families.
