Freeborn County Historical Society
A verified US-registered nonprofit
FCHS preserves history of Freeborn County through archives, activities & displays for the benefit of all who share an interest in history.
The Freeborn County Historical Society began over 60 years ago with a handful of members that felt the importance of preserving the history of not only the county, but its people also. They started out with only volunteers and items being stored in garages, basements and the like. They later were able to have a room in the lower level of the courthouse and had school tours by appointment. The museum building was built in 1965. They still operated with only volunteers until 1987 when a director was hired. Through the years additional staff were added and the museum and library are now open year round, Tuesday through Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Annually we have over 10,000 visitors, this year so far we have had visitors from 16 foreign countries and 36 different states. We hope that you will come visit us soon. We have approximately 2800 students tour our museum and village during the month of May. We work with the schools throughout the county to make our facility and resources available to students and teachers.
