Foundation for the National Institutes of Health
A US registered nonprofit

Bethesda, MD USA

Mission

The Foundation leverages NIH's science with private-sector support for biomedical advances that benefit people around the world. As a non-profit organization, the Foundation serves donors who wish to support biomedical research by building on the resources and talent at NIH in specific areas of interest. In addition, the Foundation supports training and advanced education programs for the investigators of tomorrow and invests in educational programs about medical research.

The Foundation's donors provide funds for programs and projects for which appropriated funds cannot be spent or in cases where private funds can leverage appropriated funds by providing additional resources, speed, flexibility or greater reach. Recently, the Foundation raised $16 million from private funders to expedite the sequencing of the mouse genome, making this critical information available to the scientific community much earlier than would otherwise have been possible and thereby expediting many areas of research.

Programs

The Foundation's programs include the Clinical Research Training Program, which awards fellowships at NIH to medical and dental students each year, providing exposure to clinical research.
The Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge Project, a temporary home away from home for families and friends, who travel long distances to accompany a loved one who is participating in clinical trials at the NIH. The Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Fund, a public private partnership to improve the safety and effectiveness of medicines for children; the Norman P. Salzman Award and Symposium, an award presented to scientists at the annual symposium for outstanding research in virology. The Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship for Women Scientists in Cancer Research, honors the memory of Sallie Kaplan, who held an abiding interest in education and in expanding opportunities for women.
