Children's Defense Fund
A US registered nonprofit
Established in 1985, Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Minnesota is the only policy organization in the state to focus solely on the needs of children. CDF Minnesota targets all Minnesota children, particularly children being raised in low-income households who suffer greater barriers to full participation in society as a result of being born into poverty. CDF Minnesota pays particular attention to the needs of our most vulnerable children — children of color, children from low-income families and children with disabilities.
To achieve its goals, CDF Minnesota conducts research, educates the community and advocates for effective tax, social and health policies on behalf of the state’s children. Current projects include:
• Assisting low-income families in receiving the public work support benefits for which they are eligible (these benefits include health care coverage, federal and state tax credits, child care assistance, home energy assistance, free and reduced-price school meals and food support), through Bridge to Benefits (www.bridgetobenefits.org).
• Documenting trends in the well-being of Minnesota children on a county-by-county basis to help local communities understand trends and better plan for their children’s needs.
• Advocating for child health coverage in Minnesota, so that children do not have to depend on their parents’ employment status and income level to gain access to basic health care.
• Advocating for access to affordable and quality child care for all Minnesota children who need it.
Nationally and locally, CDF is a private organization supported by individuals, foundations, and corporate grants. CDF neither seeks nor accepts government funds.
Policymakers across the political spectrum, child advocates and childcare and health providers consistently work with CDF Minnesota and depend on its research findings. More information about CDF Minnesota programs and research studies can be found at www.cdf-mn.org.
