Catalyst Foundation helps build communities in Vietnam to fight trafficking.

Catalyst Foundation is currently working in a rural part of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta to build communities to fight human trafficking. Our story, the work we do, and our fight to stop trafficking will be featured in three episodes of the “CNN Freedom Project” to be aired in the upcoming weeks.

Five years ago, we were introduced to a community of displaced people; so poor that they live, eat, work, give birth in and die at a garbage dump. So poor, children, starting at 3 years old, are obligated to work so there is food to survive until the next day. So poor, families sell their daughters’ innocence to survive.

There is no simple option to stop trafficking. Catalyst Foundation believes there is only a holistic approach to ending this tragedy. Through education community development, we are giving these communities and its daughters HOPE!

Catalyst Foundation has built a school, which provides an education to children denied this basic right. 98% of the community was illiterate, now there are boys and girls who will be the first generation to go to high school. They have been denied an education, as well as health care, protection, housing and other basic human needs. As part of the community development, Catalyst Foundation works to provide identity papers, proper housing, basic health care for children and pregnant women, vocational training for over 100 teenagers and adults, family planning, counseling and community self-governing techniques.

We believe that empowering a community that has been ignored and forgotten is the building block for hope. Our success is the community program and how it changed the lives of the nearly 100 families we first met in the garbage dump.

Unfortunately, we now have an additional 500 families waiting desperately for our help. Our staff has doubled in an effort to effectively administer our programs, as well as keep pace with the community’s needs.

We are in a critical need of funding to continue building this community to so that they can eventually sustain themselves through success, solidarity, and community cooperation.

We need your help - not later – today NOW...before one more child is lost.

It is an honor to support an organization that understands that fighting poverty requires sustained, community development, instead of a one-time effort. Thank you Catalyst.

This contribution is from Naomi Frisch, 11 going on 12, who will be returning to Vietnam with AE2010. She was a member of AE2008 with her family, and as an adopted Vietnam-born member of an American family she found the trip, the Catalyst community, and the work and people in Vietnam very, very meaningful. She has wanted to make her own contribution, from her savings, to this important work.

This is in honor of Ben Weisberg's bar mitzvah, and in honor of Caroline Ticarro-Parker, an amazing humanitarian who shows how much just one person can really do.

Having visited the country and experienced the beauty of the people as well as the ugliness that poverty brings creates a desire to assist if even in a small way. Little things mean a lot to the gentle and hard-working people of this impoverished country - and even a small donation can do great things.
