The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

The American Cancer Society's programs and services include:

- Research:
The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, not-for-profit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. The Society spent about $148 million on cancer research in FY 2008. Since 1946, the Society has invested about $3.4 billion in cancer research. The research program consists of 3 components: extramural grants, intramural epidemiology and surveillance research, and the intramural behavioral research center.

- Cancer Information Services:
Providing the public with accurate, up-to-date information on cancer is a priority for the American Cancer Society. The Society provides information on all aspects of cancer through a toll-free information line, web site, and published materials.

- International Program: The mission of the American Cancer Society is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Because cancer is a global health problem, this mission extends around the world. Cancer is increasing as a leading killer globally, especially in the developing world.

- Advocacy & Public Policy:
Cancer is a political issue. Every day, government policymakers make decisions that affect the lives of nearly 10 million cancer patients, survivors, their families, and all those at risk for developing cancer. To impact those decisions positively, the Society has identified advocacy as one of its top corporate priorities and works nationwide to promote beneficial policies, laws, and regulations for those affected by cancer.

- Community Programs & Services

- American Cancer Society Foundation:
The American Cancer Society Foundation is established as an entity of the American Cancer Society, Inc. Its mission is to accelerate the control and cure of cancer by securing major gifts and endowments from individuals, corporations, and foundations to support research, programs, and services of the American Cancer Society, Inc., and its Chartered Divisions.
