Razoo Giving Guide: World Hunger
In Haiti, locals line up in front of bakeries to purchase mud cakes to bring home to their families. These specialties aren’t made from chocolate, as you might imagine—but from pure dirt and water, baked under the sun until hard and brittle. In a country where even bread is too costly for most families, eating mud cakes is often the only way to keep from starving to death.
Though Haiti faces one of the world’s worst food shortages, it’s far from alone. Factors such as drought, poor agricultural management, war, and poverty have turned the hunger problem into a global epidemic: Across the globe, more than 923 million people do not have access to enough food to keep them healthy. In recent years, the price of food has skyrocketed in many developing countries, making the situation even more dire: Every day, about 25,000 people die from hunger-related causes.
Feeding the hungry isn’t quite as simple as shipping our leftovers off to Haiti or Nigeria—it’s a huge issue that takes research, advocacy, and billions of dollars to solve. Fortunately, many nonprofits are concerned with finding sustainable solutions to the hunger problem to ensure that more people don’t die from lack of nutrition. Here are some groups helping to feed the world—from the farthest reaches of the globe all the way to your neighbor down the street. Raise money for these nonprofits and other nonprofits.
