On any city street, it’s impossible to miss them: Men sprawled out in doorways or bus shelters, all their earthly possessions collected in a single garbage bag. A woman cradling a baby and an empty coffee cup, begging for spare change as you walk by.
Homelessness is one of the most pervasive problems in American society. In a single year, 3.5 million people—one percent of the population—will experience the horrors of homelessness. 30 percent will spend two years or more on the streets. And in many cases, lack of shelter is the least of a homeless person’s problems. Millions of displaced people also face issues like drug addiction, psychological problems, hunger, and HIV/AIDS.
You probably already know that simply tossing a dollar or two into a homeless person’s cup won’t be the solution to his problem. If you want to offer real support to America’s homeless community, these are some organizations working to provide lasting solutions.
