Most Americans take water for granted. We take long, luxurious showers, plant high-maintenance flower beds, and buy expensive bottled water from far-off lands like Fiji, rather than drinking the perfectly healthy tap water available in our houses. Meanwhile, people in Fiji and hundreds of other developing nations around the world are struggling just to stay alive—more than 1.1 billion people around the world lack access to clean drinking water. Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease.

Water is our most precious resource, and in much of the world, there’s simply not enough clean water for people to live on. Dirty water and sanitation problems cause 88 percent of all diseases, and diarrhea kills more than 4,900 children each day. Even those who don’t become ill from dirty water often suffer in other ways: women and girls are forced to travel long distances to carry water home from wells, missing out on educational opportunities and leaving themselves vulnerable to attackers. The water issue is such a global crisis, in fact, that it’s taken more lives than any war.

Water is the most essential need for all human beings. Here are some of the groups working to supply clean water to everyone—by lending your support, you could help end the health crisis claiming so many lives each day.
